Open Air The New Pleinairisme

March 15, 2012 to June 25, 2012

This exhibition brought together a selection of recent open-air works by sixteen artists from a dozen countries in the Americas and Europe. Taking inspiration from the experience of nature and the landscape, these artists re-invent working out of doors, attentive to the intensity of the present moment, to the passing of time and to the changing light, temperature and environment. Drawings, watercolours, collages, texts, paintings, sculptures videos and photographs attested to a wide range of approaches and strategies. These artists revisit plein air practices by exploring a nature which, for many of us, is in the process of disappearing. To complement the exhibition, a selection of 19th and 20th century paintings enabled visitors to discover the ties between pleinairisme of former times and that of today.

The work of numerous artists was included in the exhibition: Roger Ackling, Francis Alÿs, Michel de Broin, Geneviève Cadieux, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Peter Doig, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Hreinn Fridfinnsson, Cyprien Gaillard, Mark Igloliorte, Janice Kerbel, Ragnar Kjartansson, Irene Kopelman, Rosario López Parra, Silke Otto-Knapp and Anri Sala.
