Since the 1980s, Amadou & Mariam have established themselves as major figures in contemporary West African music, reaching millions worldwide with a style immediately recognizable. Both blind, they developed a unique approach to music, grounded in listening, gesture, and intuition.

Amadou et Mariam : Sons du Mali follows the artists as they work on a new album and prepare for a major homecoming concert. Between studio sessions, rehearsals, and life on tour, the film paints a portrait of a duo driven by infectious joy and an unwavering faith in the power of sound to bring people together.

Ryan Marley

Ryan Marley is a filmmaker and television director best known for his work in documentary, factual, and kids TV. He has been nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards and has directed over 30 series and documentaries. Recent projects include all four seasons of the ground-breaking documentary series Employable Me, which follows job seekers who prove that having a physical disability or neurological condition shouldn’t determine employability. The series won the Diversify TV Excellence Award at MIPCOM 2017 and 2020, Rockie Awards in 2018, 2019, and 2020, and the Canadian Screen Award for Best Factual Series.

His documentary Sitting Tall: The Patrick Anderson Story explores the life and career of the world’s greatest wheelchair basketball player as he prepared for the Tokyo Paralympic Games; it screened at the 2021 Awareness Film Festival and the New York Shorts International Film Festival, where it won Best Documentary. In 2022, Marley’s documentary Candidato 34 was selected for competition at four Oscar-qualifying festivals: Cleveland International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, Durban International Film Festival, and the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Ryan has recently finished directing multiple episodes of A&E’s iconic series Hoarders and Intervention. He has also recently completed his latest feature documentary, The Blind Couple From Mali, which tells the extraordinary journey of blind African musical duo Amadou & Mariam. Ryan lives in Toronto.
