In September 1871, sixteen-year-old Arthur Rimbaud flees his native Ardennes for Paris, the capital of artists and insurgents. Immersing himself in bohemian life, he joins the group of poets known as the Parnassians. In a few electrifying verses, the young prodigy upends the poetry of his time.
Walking alongside Verlaine, his “companion in hell,” through the city’s darkest streets, Rimbaud experiments with the forbidden, discovering sex, drugs, and night of drunken excess. In post-Commune Paris, where the barricades still smolder, moral authority has reasserted itself, and Rimbaud burns with the desire to escape it. Rebellious and furious, he dreams of transgression, vertigo, and upheaval.
Based on Henri Fantin-Latour’s famous painting—the only artwork to depict the controversial poet couple—this documentary, featuring the voices of Zaho de Sagazan and Félix Moati, invites the viewer to explore a decisive episode in Arthur Rimbaud’s life.
