Curator of Espace Riopelle — Michael Audain Pavilion’s inaugural exhibitions, André Gilbert offers a fresh perspective on Jean Paul Riopelle’s five-decade career.

Looking beyond the celebrated mosaic paintings of the 1950s, he reveals an artist in constant reinvention, continually exploring new media, techniques, and forms of visual expression. Tracing Riopelle’s life and work through the major themes of the landmark exhibition Riopelle. The Expression of Gesture, Gilbert sheds light on the evolution of the artist’s remarkably diverse practice while sharing the ideas and reflections that shaped his curatorial approach.

Art historian and cultural manager André Gilbert has been an exhibition curator at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ) since 2015. He is responsible for the Québec City presentation of Rembrandt: Etchings from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. In recent years, he has organized major exhibitions devoted to leading figures of modern art, including Alberto Giacometti, Berthe Morisot, Joan Miró, Frida Kahlo, and J.M.W. Turner.

From 2009 to 2015, Gilbert served as managing editor at the MNBAQ, overseeing nearly 30 publications, several of which received awards for excellence. From 2001 to 2009, he directed VU, an artist-run centre within the Méduse cooperative, where he produced more than 80 exhibitions and 25 artist residencies in contemporary photography.

Gilbert has developed extensive expertise in organizing international exhibitions, collaborating with partners in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Mexico, and elsewhere. He holds a master’s degree in modern art history, has published numerous essays on 20th-century art, and taught art history at Université Laval for approximately a decade.
